Ghana's President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has been reported safe following an accident involving the presidential convoy in the Eastern Region on Sunday.
According to reports a Kia truck caused the accident at Bonsu Junction in the Eastern Region while the President was returning from Kumasi where he had attended some official duties.
The driver of one of the land cruisers died instantly and three other occupants of the vehicle took various degrees of injury. Videos of the incident spread speedily as the news made the rounds, but a statement from the Presidency moments after the crash said the President was not in the convoy.
The statement said the President had traveled by air back to Accra, and further gave updates on the status of he victims of the crash.
"Fortunately, the President is safe and unharmed, as he travelled to Accra via military aircraft. Additionally, several close protection and police officers from the President's security detail sustained varying degrees of injuries and received initial treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital.
"The injured persons are currently being evacuated to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for further treatment and observation,” the statement read.
The incident occurred same day Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash after commissioning a dam in one of the Middle Eastern country’s mountainous regions.
Seven others in the aircraft with the President were also killed, among them the country’s Foreign Minister and the Governor of one of its provinces.
