The 115th anniversary celebration of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, observed nationwide as a public holiday, was marked at Mawuli School in Ho in grand style
While many commemorated the day in a solemn manner, reflecting on the virtues of the nation’s first president, events at Mawuli School took a different twist.
The school’s management, teaching staff, and some non-teaching staff embarked on a 5-kilometer health walk that commenced at 6:00 AM, with participants setting off from the school's premises.
The route took them through the principal streets of Ho, providing an invigorating start to the day. Upon returning to the school, the group transitioned into an energetic aerobics session expertly led by the Physical Education Department.
Numbering over 100, these members of the Mawuli School community were seen in joyous moments as they danced, moved, and exercised to the admiration of townsfolk and students.
The activity was organized by the welfare association under Mabel Asamany, the chairperson. She used the occasion to admonish teachers to be exemplary role models for the students and, above all, to serve as parental figures.
“Let your relationship with the students be such that they can feel comfortable around you and freely voice whatever is disturbing them,” she said. Dr. Nkrumah was inspired by his teacher Kwegyir Aggrey, and as a result, he rose to the status of a global icon; 52 years after his demise, his name is still remembered and celebrated yearly.
The headmaster of Mawuli School, Mr. Benjamin Dei, was enthused by the teachers' response to the event and took the opportunity to commend the Physical Education Department for their professional handling of the aerobics session. Again, Mr. Dei urged staff members to take their health seriously.
“Striking a balance between work and personal life is crucial to becoming effective members of this community,” he said, acknowledging the pressure everyone faces.
“Be it in the cooking department, security, teaching, or lab work, your best is needed at all times. Hence, you need to be fit to deliver consistently. These activities are ways to stay healthy.”
Mr. Dogah, the assistant headmaster in charge of academics, reminded teachers to familiarize themselves with the new curriculum for an easy transition when the Form One students report.
Rev. Domi, the assistant headmaster of administration, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of exercising for its numerous benefits.
Some students, thrilled to see their teachers exercising, expressed a desire for such aerobics sessions to be organized at least once a month to help keep them fit.
