Ghana’s regions to be ranked by cleanliness

The Regions would be assessed for waste disposal, and efforts to maintain a healthy environment, and the Volta Region was chosen for the launch undoubtedly for its acclaimed cleanliness, and whose capital is popularly known as the Oxygen City of Ghana.

Ghana’s 16 regions are to be ranked by their cleanliness and sanitation as part of an initiative being undertaken by the nation’s premier news paper the Daily Graphic, with support from waste management giant, Zoomlion.

A Cleanest Region Ranking was launched in Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, and is designed to encourage collective responsibility towards a more sustainable environment.

The Regions would be assessed for waste disposal, and efforts to maintain a healthy environment, and the Volta Region was chosen for the launch undoubtedly for its acclaimed cleanliness, and whose capital is popularly known as the Oxygen City of Ghana.

Physical assessment by Zoomlion would account for 60 per cent of the score, and the remaining 40 would be the privy of the public using a *857*7# short code.

Ghana’s regions to be ranked by cleanliness

The Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, Mr. Ato Afful, addressing stakeholders at the launch, noted how the rankings would restore sanitation and dignity, promote tourism development as well as economic growth.

“We want to recognise and reward the cleanest region. We want to ensure that tis initiative would lead to a tangible difference in our regions.

“We want this to go across the nation so that our people’s health and human wellbeing would be enhanced. It will promote a feeling of pride by leaving behind clean spaces, and it will be fair, transparent and just,” he said.

Other entities including the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, the Environmental Service Providers Association, Nerasol, are partnering the initiative.

The rankings would run for a year, with the first results expected in June 2024.
