Uncontrollable fire on Wednesday levelled more than 500 inhabited wooden shacks in Tuabodom, a densely populated slum community located on the fringes of the motorway in Tema Community 12.
The source of the inferno is unknown, and it took several teams of firefighters making up close to 100 personnel to end the inferno and prevent it from consuming nearby installations in the light industrial enclave.
A car garage with over 60 vehicles was lucky to have been spared, and residents nearby looked on helplessly as the fire threatened their investments.
Tema Regional Fire Commander AFCO Patrick Sallah told the media, fire officers were assembled from the national office to augment the efforts.
He said the fire office responded promptly to a distress call from the area at about 2pm, and spent close to two hours trying to bring the blazing fire under control.
In a joint effort, teams from the Police, Ambulance Service and the Electricity Company of Ghana fought the raging inferno which ended around 5 pm.
Residents are still counting losses as whole livelihoods have been completely destroyed in the aftermath of the fire with appeals for humanitarian organisations to support victims.
The Fire Chief, confirmed that no fatalities were recorded and says investigations were underway to determine the cause.
Tuabodom is a community of thousands of slum dwellers living in the shadow of one of the most affluent residential areas in the Tema Metropolis.
