Second housing project for victims of Akosombo dam spillage commissioned

The 300 capacity housing project follows the success of an earlier such initiative which has been completed and is in use, also holding 300 displaced people.

A second housing project for persons displaced by the Akosombo Dam spillage, has been commissioned for use in Volta Region’s North Tongu District.

The 300 capacity housing project follows the success of an earlier such initiative which has been completed and is in use, also holding 300 displaced people.

The Safe Alternative Housing Project is being undertaken by Ghanaian conglomerate First Sky Group, and over all, seeks to relocate some 12,000 displaced by the October 2023 flooding of districts in the lower Volta basin during a controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams.

More than 40,000 were displaced in what has become the largest natural disaster the nation has recorded in recent times.

Schools in affected communities have been taken over by the displaced as thousands of homes were submerged, and the First Sky Group became the first to initiate a resettlement project to support the efforts of the MP for North Tongu, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The housing project was completed in a record seven weeks, and former President and Flag bearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, led the commissioning, Saturday evening.

He was joined by Chiefs from the area, and also, Togbe Tepre Hodo, the President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs.

Relatedly, Accra-based private media organisation, Citi, also recently completed and handed over a similar housing unit for the affected in the Kpando Municipality, where the flood devastation had also been severe.

Countless organisations, individuals and association have donated to various communities affected by the spillage, and the nations’s health service among other stakeholders are racing to avert health, sanitaion and other disasters.
